The production stays close to the Beach House school of dream pop — vocals kept intimate, atmosphere built from restraint rather than reverb — but the songwriting owes more to an older, more literary tradition, one suspicious of easy resolution.

What holds the record together isn't narrative so much as temperature: it cools, verse by verse, from conviction toward something closer to elegy. Nothing here resolves cleanly, and that's the point — the title itself refuses to answer its own question. Not in Vain? doesn't argue for meaning or against it.
