The River Keeps Running

Far beyond the fields and the winter white,

A river keeps moving through day and night.

Long before my name, long after I'm gone,

It carries the silence and carries the song.

My mother once told me:

"One day you'll grow tired,

Of chasing horizons and feeding the fire.

And when that day finds you,

No matter how far,

Come home to the water,

Remember who you are."

I was seventeen,

Certain the world was mine.

I was thirty,

Still racing against the time.

Now the years stand beside me

Like old friends in the dark,

And the river keeps flowing

The same as the start.

Here are my people,

Here is my shore.

The things that I needed

And searched for before.

And somewhere downstream,

In the evening light,

Another young dreamer

Is singing tonight.

The river keeps running,

It never explains.

Through harvest and snowfall,

Through losses and gains.

And for just a moment,

Before I depart,

I borrow its endlessness

Into my heart.
